Police Scotland's latest advice for the public to "remain alert but not alarmed" is a response to an antisemitic terrorist attack that occurred at a Hanukkah event in Bondi Beach, Sydney, Australia. This follows an earlier alert from October 2025 after a synagogue attack in Manchester, England, which led to a general uplift in security for the Jewish High Holy Days.

Here are the key points from Police Scotland's most recent statements:

  • Increased Patrols: Police Scotland officers are already conducting additional and dedicated patrols around synagogues and other Jewish venues as part of their existing policing plan for Hanukkah.

  • No Specific Threat in Scotland: Assistant Chief Constable Steve Johnson confirmed there is no intelligence to suggest any specific threat in Scotland following the Bondi Beach attack.

  • Community Engagement: Police are actively communicating with faith leaders and community leaders.

  • Public Vigilance: The public is asked to "remain alert but not alarmed," to be vigilant, and to report any suspicious activity to Police Scotland.

Other police forces across the UK, including the Metropolitan Police, have also announced increased patrols and security measures around Jewish communities following the events in Sydney.

New footage shows two gunmen shooting at Jews attending at Hanukkah festival on Bondi Beach. A younger man, identified as Naveed Akram, can be seen shooting from a bridge, while a second older gunman walks towards stalls and opens fire. The men appear to have several weapons. The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC)

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is a nonprofit civil rights organization founded in 1971 in Montgomery, Alabama, by lawyers Morris Dees and Joseph Levin Jr. with civil rights leader Julian Bond as its first president. Initially focused on fighting poverty and racial discrimination, the SPLC quickly became known for its innovative legal work, most notably using civil suits to win devastating, multimillion-dollar judgments against violent white supremacist groups like the Ku Klux Klan, effectively bankrupting them. Today, its work includes tracking and exposing hate groups and extremist organizations through its Intelligence Project, advocating for criminal justice reform, immigrants' rights, children's rights, and LGBT equality, and providing anti-bias education to schools nationwide through its Learning for Justice program (formerly Teaching Tolerance). The SPLC remains dedicated to dismantling white supremacy and advancing the human rights of all people.

Students from Ghana at UK universities say they are in danger of being deported after being stranded by their own government without promised scholarships or tuition fee payments. The group representing more than 100 doctoral students has petitioned Downing Street and Keir Starmer asking for help to persuade the Ghanaian government to pay the backlog of tuition fees and living allowances running into millions of pounds.

The petition sent to Downing Street says the funding crisis “is so severe that some colleagues are now facing court cases over unpaid rent. To survive, some have had to depend on food banks because they have no money to feed themselves.”

The students affected are at institutions spread across Britain, including University College London, Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen and the universities of Nottingham, Bradford, Warwick, Lincoln and Liverpool.

At least 12 people have died in Australia after a shooting at Sydney's Bondi Beach on Sunday, which authorities have said was a terrorist attack against the Jewish community. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns confirmed in a press conference that one of the gunmen was dead, and another was in custody. Police said earlier on Sunday that the second shooter was in critical condition after being injured. A total of 29 people were injured, including two police officers, according to the last update from authorities on Sunday. New South Wales Police have said the number of casualties is expected to change as the operation continues. Police added that they had found what they believe to be several improvised explosive devices in a car nearby, and bomb disposal units are working to make them safe. Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed that the deceased offender had been known to the authorities, but there had been no "specific threat".

1. Details of the Report and the Warning

The warning about "millions" originated from an analysis that found a large segment of the population is legally vulnerable to having their citizenship revoked.

  • The Estimated Figure (The "Millions"):

    • Analysis by the New Statesman (December 2021) estimated that nearly six million people in England and Wales could be eligible for deprivation of citizenship.

    • This vulnerability applies to any British citizen who is, or is considered to be, eligible for citizenship in another country (e.g., through birthright or descent).

  • The Disproportionate Impact on Muslims:

    • Reports argue that the powers are implemented almost exclusively against British Muslims, particularly those of South Asian, Middle Eastern, or North African heritage.

    • The Muslim Census noted that while Muslims are approximately 5 percent of the UK population, they represent over a quarter of the 5.6 million people identified as potentially eligible for citizenship deprivation.

    • The key criticism is that these laws create a two-tiered system of citizenship, where citizens of minority ethnic backgrounds have a "second-class, disposable, contingent citizenship."

2. The Legislation (The Cause)

The primary concern is the Home Secretary's power under Section 40 of the British Nationality Act 1981, which allows citizenship to be stripped if it is deemed "conducive to the public good."

The controversy intensified with the passage of the Nationality and Borders Act 2022, which made two key changes:

  1. Removal of the Notice Requirement: The Act allows the Home Secretary to make a deprivation order without giving prior written notice to the individual in "exceptional circumstances."

  2. Latest Legal Change (October 2025): The Deprivation of Citizenship Orders (Effect during Appeal) Act 2025 was passed. This law means that if a person who was stripped of their citizenship successfully wins an initial appeal, their British citizenship is no longer automatically reinstated if the government intends to pursue further appeals.

💥 Consequences of UK Citizenship Deprivation Powers

The extended powers under the Nationality and Borders Act 2022 have far-reaching consequences, particularly for minority communities:

1. "Second-Class" Citizenship Status

  • Detail: Critics argue the legislation signals that minority citizens are not considered "true" citizens in the same way as those with only British nationality.

  • Impact: Reduces their citizenship to a privilege that can be revoked rather than an absolute right, fundamentally altering their legal standing.

2. Risk of Exile and Difficulty of Appeal

  • Detail: Deprivation orders are often served when individuals are overseas.

  • Impact: This effectively exiles them and makes it extremely difficult to access legal aid, contest the decision, or return to the UK for their appeal hearing.

3. Mental and Community Impact

  • Detail: The persistent, existential threat of losing citizenship has an immediate effect on vulnerable communities.

  • Impact: It has been linked to increased fear, anxiety, a feeling of alienation, and prompting some individuals to consider leaving the country.

4. Legal Precedent (The 2025 Act)

  • Detail: The Deprivation of Citizenship Orders (Effect during Appeal) Act 2025 states that a citizen's status is not automatically restored, even if they win their initial appeal.

  • Impact: The individual's life remains in limbo. They can be detained or barred from re-entry while the Home Office pursues further legal challenges, extending the period of legal uncertainty.

The decision by Swiss singer Nemo, the 2024 Eurovision winner, to return their glass microphone trophy to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) is the latest and most dramatic development in the ongoing political fallout surrounding Israel's participation in the contest. Nemo, the first openly non-binary winner, stated that the EBU's refusal to expel Israel—citing a "clear conflict" between the competition’s stated values of "unity, inclusion, and dignity for all" and Israel's conduct in the Gaza conflict—means the trophy no longer belongs on their shelf. They explicitly stated this protest is not against individual artists but against the contest being used to "soften the image of a state accused of severe wrongdoing." The move, made via an Instagram video, is a powerful personal statement that injects the debate directly into the contest's Hall of Fame.

The immediate relevance of Nemo's protest is the further destabilization of the Eurovision Song Contest, a cultural event that prides itself on being "non-political" but is now facing an unprecedented level of political division. The act follows a recent EBU General Assembly vote to keep Israel in the 2026 competition. In response, five national broadcasters—Iceland, Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, and Slovenia—have already announced they will boycott next year's event. This growing wave of withdrawals and high-profile protests deepens the crisis for the EBU, making the 2026 contest, slated for Vienna, one of the most politically turbulent in its history. The organization's official response was to express sadness but to respect Nemo’s "deeply held views," maintaining the position that the contest is apolitical despite the mounting boycotts and direct rebuke from a reigning champion.

Global fashion brand Prada has announced a line of limited-edition footwear inspired by Indian-made Kolhapuri sandals, months after it faced backlash for allegedly appropriating the sandal's design. The Italian luxury brand will make 2,000 pairs of sandals in India's Maharashtra and Karnataka states, under a deal with two state-backed entities, Reuters news agency reports.

The collection is set to go on sale in February 2026, online and in 40 Prada stores across the world.

A pair of sandals are reportedly set to be sold for $939, which amounts to around £800 and 84,000 rupees.

On Friday, Maharashtra's Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat told BBC Marathi that the new initiative will be called 'Prada Made in India – Inspired by Kolhapuri Chappals [sandals]'.

The EU has opened an investigation into Google over its artificial intelligence (AI) summaries which appear above search results.

The European Commission said it would examine whether the firm used data from websites to provide this service - and if it failed to offer "appropriate compensation" to publishers. It is also investigating how YouTube videos may have been used to improve its broader AI systems, and whether content creators were able to opt-out.

A Google spokesperson said the probe "risks stifling innovation in a market that is more competitive than ever".

"Europeans deserve to benefit from the latest technologies and we will continue to work closely with the news and creative industries as they transition to the AI era," they said.

An Israeli drone company, malaria testing technology, and the proposed sale of an American billionaire’s oil and gas empire are among the many previously unknown business ventures that former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak discussed with the late sex offender and financier Jeffrey Epstein, leaked emails reveal. Epstein served as a trusted financial adviser, fixer, concierge, sounding board, and even friend to the ex-Israeli leader during a long-running relationship that blurred professional and personal boundaries, the emails suggest.

Like many powerful figures in Epstein’s orbit, Barak, who said he first met the late financier in 2003, continued his association with Epstein for years after he became a convicted sex offender following a controversial plea deal in 2008. The emails, which span 2013 to 2016, were published in August by the whistleblower site Distributed Denial of Secrets after being stolen by the hacktivist group Handala, which the government of Canada has linked to Iran’s intelligence agencies.

A powerful magnitude earthquake has hit off the northeastern coast of Japan, with officials warning tsunami waves of up to three metres could hit. Watch and follow live. Senior lecturer in oceanography at the University of Southampton Simon Boxall tells Sky News that today's earthquake is "in the same location" as the 2011 earthquake that killed more than 19,700 people and sparked a disaster at the Fukushima nuclear plant.

Speaking to presenter Jayne Secker, Boxall says that in the coming minutes and hours we'll find out just how damaging today's earthquake is. But he adds that "not all quakes create tsunamis".

The Japanese prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, has provided brief comments on the situation to reporters just a few moments ago.

She said the government set up an emergency task force to assess the extent of damage.

"We are putting people's lives first and doing everything we can," Takaichi said.
