afghanistanhistory (1)

The case of Farkhunda Malikzada is a story that breaks the heart of anyone who hears it. Much like the "Nirbhaya" case or the story of Canny Ong, it represents a moment where a whole country had to stop and look at its own soul. Farkhunda was a 27-year-old student of Islamic Law who was brutally killed in broad daylight in the center of Kabul, Afghanistan. Her death was not just a crime; it was a tragedy built on a lie that led to a mob of hundreds taking the life of an innocent woman.

▫️ The False Accusation and the Mob

In March 2015, Farkhunda was near a famous mosque in Kabul. She was a devout Muslim who spent her time studying and teaching the Quran. While there, she got into an argument with a man who was selling "amulets" (charms) to women. Farkhunda told him that what he was doing was not part of Islam and that he was tricking people. To protect his business and get revenge, the man shouted a lie to the crowd: he claimed Farkhunda had burned a copy of the Quran.

Within minutes, a mob of nearly 150 men surrounded her. They didn't stop to ask for proof. They didn't listen to her pleas. They beat her with sticks and stones, ran over her with a car, and eventually set her body on fire by the river. All of this happened while hundreds of people watched and some even filmed it on their phones.

▫️ The Truth Comes Out

After the horror was over, the Afghan government launched a deep investigation. They searched the area, interviewed witnesses, and checked the evidence. The official result was clear: Farkhunda was 100% innocent. There was no burned Quran. She had been murdered because she stood up for her faith against a man who was using religion for money.

The investigation also revealed a painful truth: the police were standing nearby and did almost nothing to save her. This led to massive protests. For the first time in Afghanistan’s history, thousands of people—both men and women—took to the streets to demand justice for a woman. At her funeral, women broke tradition by carrying her coffin themselves, a powerful sign of defiance against the violence she faced.

▫️ The Fight for Justice and a New Legacy

The legal battle for Farkhunda was long and difficult. Dozens of men were arrested, and some were sentenced to long prison terms. Even several police officers were sent to jail for failing to protect her. While many activists felt the sentences weren't strong enough, the case led to a permanent change in how Afghan society talks about women's rights and the dangers of mob justice.

Today, Farkhunda is remembered as a martyr and a symbol of courage. A memorial stands at the spot where she was killed to remind everyone that we must never allow lies and hate to take another life. Her story teaches us that true faith is about justice and mercy, not violence. Like Canny Ong, Farkhunda’s name will never be forgotten because her story forced the world to wake up and demand a safer, more humane future for every woman.

▫️ Why We Share This

We share Farkhunda’s story because silence is what allows these tragedies to happen. By telling the truth about what happened in Kabul, we honor a woman who died defending her beliefs. Her legacy lives on in every person who speaks up against injustice and every community that chooses peace over anger. Let us remember her name and continue the work of making the world a place where every human life is treated with dignity.
