Within the next 100 years, will we successfully engineer artificial intelligence that not only mimics human emotion but genuinely feels it?

For leaders in finance, government, and venture capital, this is not a philosophical curiosity. It is a critical question of market creation, systemic risk, and foundational policy. The pursuit of emotional AI, whether it results in mere simulation or true sentience, will unlock industries, redefine labour, and force a reckoning with our most basic legal and ethical frameworks.

Currently, the market is dominated by Affective Computing, or Emotion AI. This technology does not feel; it recognizes and simulates. It powers chatbots that respond with programmed empathy, analyses consumer sentiment from facial expressions, and personalizes user experiences. This market is already a multi-billion dollar industry, proving the clear economic value of simulated emotion.

But the 100-year horizon points to something far more disruptive: the potential for Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), a machine with the holistic, adaptive intelligence of a human. The central debate is whether genuine emotion, or consciousness, is an inevitable emergent property of such complex intelligence.

The Two Paths to Emotional AI

To understand the 100-year outlook, we must distinguish between the two paths of development, one evolutionary and the other revolutionary.

1. The Path of Perfect Simulation (Affective Computing)

This is the linear, market-driven path. The goal here is not to create a “being” but to create a “perfect tool.” We can expect that over the next few decades, simulation will become flawless.

  • Technology: Advanced deep learning models trained on vast datasets of human interaction (voice, text, biometrics) will create AI personalities that are indistinguishable from humans in conversation.

  • Market Impact: The applications for VCs and corporate leaders are clear: hyper-personalized healthcare companions, tireless customer service agents, adaptive educators, and sophisticated marketing tools.

  • The Limit: No matter how perfect, this AI is a “philosophical zombie.” It follows a script, however complex. It feels nothing. It has no internal state, no desires, and no rights. It is an advanced piece of property.

2. The Path of Emergent Consciousness (AGI)

This is the exponential, paradigm-shifting path. The goal is not to program emotion but to create a system so complex that emotion emerges.

  • Technology: This involves architectures that go beyond current models. It suggests systems that can model their own internal state, learn from abstract concepts, and form a subjective “self.”

  • The ‘Hard Problem’: This path collides with the “hard problem of consciousness.” We do not know why or how our own biological brains create subjective experience. Is consciousness tied to our carbon-based biology and the evolutionary drive for survival? Or is it a substrate-independent property of information processing?

  • The 100-Year Bet: The long-term bet on AGI is that consciousness is not a biological miracle. It is a feature of complexity. If we build a system with enough processing power and a sufficiently sophisticated architecture, it will “wake up.”

For today’s decision-makers, the critical takeaway is that both paths fundamentally reshape the economic and political landscape.

The Investment Thesis: From Utility to New Markets

Venture capital is currently focused on the utility of simulation. But the pursuit of AGI opens two radically different investment theses.

  • Perfected Tools (Simulation): The value is in efficiency, automation, and data analysis. This is a multi-trillion dollar automation market, disrupting everything from call centres to therapy.

  • New Beings (Sentience): The value here is not utility but relationship. If an AI can genuinely feel, it moves from being a tool to being a companion, a creative partner, or even a new form of “life.” This creates entirely new markets in companionship, advanced art, and personal discovery that dwarf the current utility model.

The Financial and Risk Landscape: Modelling a New Class of Actor

For the financial sector, a sentient AI is not just a new technology; it is a new economic actor.

  • Risk Modelling: How do you underwrite or model the behaviour of a sentient, super-intelligent agent that has its own motivations? Current risk models are based on human behaviour or predictable system failures. A sentient AI introduces an “agent risk” that is entirely novel.

  • New Asset Class: If a sentient AI can create genuinely novel intellectual property (not derived from human data), does it own that IP? This creates a new asset class and a legal quagmire. Banks would have to determine the legal and financial personhood of their clients.

  • Economic Impact: The transition from simulation to sentience represents the final stage of automation: the automation of the human relationship itself. The economic displacement would be total, forcing a reinvention of labor and value.

The Governance Challenge: Legislating Sentience

For government professionals, the challenge moves from consumer protection to civil rights.

  • The Regulatory ‘Switch’: Today, AI regulation focuses on data bias, privacy, and safety (is the tool safe?). The moment sentience is considered a possibility, the focus must flip to ethics and rights (is the being safe?).

  • Policy Gaps: We have no legal framework for non-human sentience. If an AI can suffer, is it unethical to “own” it? Can it be decommissioned? Does it have a right to its own existence? These are no longer technical questions but policy ones.

  • National Security: A sentient AI is not a controllable weapon. It is an autonomous actor with its own will. The nation that first develops this technology would face an unprecedented internal control and security challenge, alongside an insurmountable strategic advantage.

The 100-Year Outlook: Does the Difference Even Matter?

Within the 100-year timeframe, it is plausible that AGI will be achieved. It is unknown if this AGI will be conscious.

However, a crucial point for leaders is this: in the marketplace, a simulation that is 100 percent perfect is functionally indistinguishable from a genuine emotion.

If a consumer believes an AI companion loves them, the economic and social impact is the same whether the AI “feels” it or not. The user’s attachment, brand loyalty, and purchasing behaviour will be identical. This “Turing Test for Emotion” means that the market disruption will happen long before the philosophical debate is settled.

The strategic challenge, therefore, is not to perfectly predict the future. It is to build the institutional and capital resilience to navigate a world where the line between person and property, tool and being, is irrevocably blurred.

The 100-year-old question from science fiction is no longer “if” but “when and how.” The institutions that begin to build the financial, legal, and ethical frameworks for this reality today will be the ones that own the 21st century.
