However, the reality in 2026 is a nightmare. Most migrants live in "shantytowns"—poor, crowded shacks—constantly terrified that French police will deport them. At the same time, the local people are frustrated. They face skyrocketing prices, a lack of schools, and a severe water crisis. Many locals blame the migrants for the rising crime, feeling like the French government has totally abandoned them.
The documentary follows people like Wadaanti, who dream of studying to escape this cycle of poverty. But in a place where even getting clean water is a struggle, fulfilling those dreams feels impossible. Mayotte is an island on the edge of a total collapse.
