Sexual violence and misogyny are part of everyday life for many women in India. But an increasing number are breaking the silence and fighting for respect and their rights – with words, music and physical strength.

Activist Usha Vishwakarma trains women in the art of self-defense. Many members of her “Red Brigade” have themselves suffered sexual violence. Rapper JQueen channels her anger into powerful rap songs as a solo artist or with her all-female band “Wild Wild Women.” And student Sheshandeep Kaur Sidhu campaigns to get more women to enter politics.

They all represent a new generation pushing back against traditional gender roles. They demand respect and personal safety despite structural barriers and societal expectations. Their resistance shows that change begins at the point where women empower themselves.
